GEORGIAN Foil Backed Purple Cabochon Paste with Seed Pearl Halo c. 1800

GEORGIAN Foil Backed Purple Cabochon Paste with Seed Pearl Halo c. 1800

This beautiful foil backed amethyst paste ring is easily over 200 years old. Paste is a type of glass that was cut and polished by hand in a very difficult and time consuming process to imitate rare gemstones. Often the paste was foil backed so light would reflect under the low light from candles or gas lamps of Georgian times. The paste portion of this ring could have come from an earring set or part of a larger parure and was at some point during its long history repurposed and set on an 800 silver ring shank. The halo originally was made of seed pearls but some have been replaced with a similar sized balls that have a metallic finish. True to time and age, the ring shows scratches to the glass, soldering to the back, and a small chip to the paste. I personally love the sings of wear and time that this ring carries with it to show its true, long history that simply cannot be reproduced by modern pieces.
