This lovely watch chain hails from the end of the Victorian period and features two well loved antique techniques: niello and vermeil. Rose gold vermeil involves starting with a base metal, in this case silver, and applying a thick layer of rose gold onto the surface. Niello, on the other hand, is a technique in which a metal mixture is fired in a kiln to fill crevices in engraved silver. It is a centuries old technique that gained popularity in Europe towards the end of the 20th century. The combination of vermeil and niello creates a stunning contrast between the radiant rose gold and the dark, intricate niello work. The result is a luxurious and eye-catching accessory that showcases the artistry and craftsmanship of ages past, perfect for those who appreciate the finer things in life.
CONDITION NOTES:
There is both gold loss to the vermeil and some wear to the niello. Niello is more durable than enamel but still must be treated with some level of care. The bolt ring and dog clip clasp are in good working condition but the bolt ring has lost some tension after years of use. It still holds securely but the spring does not snap into place as it once did.
