18K Antique Garnet Paste Sleeper Earrings

Unique, eye catching, and detailed, these lovely earrings are the perfect size to wear comfortably but make an impression. They are centered with a beautiful garnet paste stone. Paste is a flint glass which has been used for centuries to imitate more expensive gems. Usually paste stones receive quite a bit of wear to the facets over time but the pastes on these earrings have remained in excellent condition. The earrings have a unique scalloped, engraved frame surrounding the central stones, which is then encircled by an elaborate twisted frame. The use of overlapping three dimensional frames and shapes adds a lot of visual interest. They are a one of a kind piece impossible to find nowadays due to the level of skill and time it would take to produce something like this by hand. Do note that they close with an antique leverback hinge which threads through the back of the ear and attaches to a rivet at the top of the earring. This can take some getting used to.
CONDITION NOTES:
There is light denting to the top circular portion of the earrings, visible in photos and the video. The hinges are in excellent condition; strong with good alignment. The paste has very light wear, consistent with age and use. The earrings are hallmarked with an eagle head, in use since 1838, guaranteeing at least 18k gold purity.
