18k Art Nouveau Drapery Necklace, Antique French Floral Draperie c. 1900 (14 g)
18k Art Nouveau Drapery Necklace, Antique French Floral Draperie c. 1900 (14 g)
Dating from the turn of the 20th century, this luxurious drapery necklace has been crafted in the Art Nouveau style with five decorative filigree panels filled with a timeless interior floral motif. Between the central panels hang a small droplet of gold which moves with the wearer. It is amazing to think of each small piece of gold being delicately wrought and then soldered together. Once adorning the neck of a very fashionable high society woman many moons ago, it would now make the perfect modern statement necklace. With a length of 45 cm it is perfectly positioned to be both comfortable and stylish. This style is known as a 'draperie' in French as it drapes across the collarbone bringing an effortless French elegance to the wearer. The links have been inspected and are strong and in good condition with only light micro-scratches to the surface of the gold. Some of the delicate filigree has been been repaired and is slightly different to the original coils, visible in photo two, but this is not visible when worn and adds some authenticity and originality to the piece. The spring ring clasp is still in excellent working order with good tension and alignment. The necklace has been hallmarked with an rhino head, indicating at least 18k gold. It's hard not to fall in love with this beauty for its sweet details, luxurious material, and skilled craftsmanship. And of course, gold never goes out of style.
