18k French Firmament Ring, Blue Glass Marcasite Ring in Gold and Silver, Rings of Heaven, XIX Century

18k French Firmament Ring, Blue Glass Marcasite Ring in Gold and Silver, Rings of Heaven, XIX Century

A favorite of Marie-Antoinette, firmament rings, or 'rings of heaven' were a popular choice in the late 18th and early 19th century. They were often crafted in the oval shield shape, as shown, with a dark blue enamel background decorated with shiny gemstones. The contrast was said to make it look like stars in the sky. The silver setting is encased with marcasites, most of which are the originals with a few replacements. Most of them are in very good condition but I did spot one cracked marcasite at the top of the ring, visible in photos. The enamel is in remarkable condition for age and shines beautifully in the light. The rub over setting has lost some silver in places, but this does not affect the stability or wearability of the ring. The ring has been resized at some point in its long history and the soldering marks are visible, especially on the inner band, however you'll likely be the only one to see this as it is of course not visible when worn. As enamel is less resilient than gemstones, it is rare to find rings of this kind in good condition. It is a beautiful, historic piece that makes a great statement.
