18k Georgian Vinaigrette Enameled Locket, Antique French Pendant c. 1830
18k Georgian Vinaigrette Enameled Locket, Antique French Pendant c. 1830
This rare beauty is known as a "vinaigrette" locket. Delicate and refined, it features chiseled scrolled borders and royal blue enameling. The front features a stunning floral design which has been delicately carved to give a lifelike appearance to the vitreous blue flowers. The reverse has a bird in flight surrounded by a spray of flowers. The locket opens with a little door to reveal an interior pierced gallery panel behind which a piece of scented cloth could be tucked to revive the wearer in case of fainting or to mask unpleasant doors. This one still retains a dried flower, a love token from another life. These beautiful pieces are becoming rarer and rarer to find. Hallmarked with a ram's head in use between 1819-1838, this lovely locket is firmly dated to the late Georgian period. I have been lucky enough to find two lately, with a smaller one also available in shop. This one is larger, heavier, and less delicate than it's charm sized partner. As they are light weight with several hinges, few have survived the passage of time, so this is a wonderful find indeed and would make a lovely addition or the astute collector.
CONDITION NOTES:
There is enamel loss to the bird and flowers on the locket reverse and the interior hinge on the pierced gallery has broken, but it still closes into place and can be removed at will. The exterior door still works very well and closes securely. The locket will need to be treated with care due to age.
