18K Gold Onyx and Sardonyx Locket, Antique French Sentimental Locket, XIX Century Two Sided Locket

This lovely two-sided onyx and sardonyx locket is bursting with charm. Simple and refined, we love the twisted border that frames the central stones. The locket opens to reveal a hinged glass partition, indicating this locket probably started it's life as a mourning locket. Victorians would often store a piece of braided hair to remember those gone before as photos were rare and very expensive. It was also possible to store a token, such as a piece of lace or a pressed flower, to remember someone or something close to your heart. As the onyx and sardonyx feature a thin layer of white banding on top, this locket was meant to be engraved with an image or monogram. An intaglio would be a beautiful way to personalize a special memory or event, an example of which can be seen in photo nine. While initials and monograms were more common as part of signet rings or watch fobs, they would make a very unique statement here as well. The locket is in excellent condition and closes with a very satisfying 'click'. It does take some practice getting open, but once you have the hang of it you can open easily. It will hold any treasures preciously inside very securely. A very lovely little locket that can be worn many different ways and personalized as you like.
