18K OMC Diamond Sleeper Earrings, Chunky Old Mine Cut Antique Victorian Belle Epoque Drop Earrings c. 1880
These lovely Victorian earrings are crafted from solid 18k rosy gold and feature a unique openwork fleur de lys designs which rises up between the double prong settings. Held securely in their grasp we find two old mine cut diamonds which measure approximately .3 carats each.
Old mine cut diamond date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. They typically exhibit a cushion-shaped silhouette, featuring gently rounded corners that set them apart from the perfectly round modern brilliant cuts. One of the hallmarks of the Old Mine Cut is its deep pavilion. This depth was necessary during the diamond-cutting process to preserve as much of the rough diamond's weight as possible. Compared to modern cuts, Old Mine Cut diamonds have a smaller table which allows the diamond's color to shine through while producing a more subdued sparkle, emphasizing its individuality and character. Old Mine Cut diamonds also feature an open cutlet, a tiny facet at the bottom of the pavilion that can appear as a small central hole.
The earrings are hallmarked with an eagle head and a numbered mount. They close with an early lever-back design which threads through the back of the ear and attaches to the rivet at the front. This can be a challenging design to get used to but the earrings attach well and hold securely.
CONDITION NOTES:
The hinges are strong with an excellent latch so you do not lose these beautiful heirloom pieces. Its notable that one hinge is extremely secure which makes it a little difficult to open. Often the hinges loosen with time. One of the diamonds has an eye visible inclusion, most visible in photo two, and a scratch to the table. Otherwise the facets are in very good condition and there is nothing which would be notable when worn or which affects the charm of these lovely antique pieces.
