18K Rose Cut Diamond Foil Backed Ring, Antique French Victorian Belle Epoque Ring

Sturdy and impressive, this ring is filled with antique charm. The rose cut diamond retains it's foil backing and is held in a very secure setting. The thick doubled band is engraved on the interior, although it's difficult to make out the date as portions of the markings have worn with time. Foil backing was a common technique in the Georgian period up through the mid-Victorian period but fell out of fashion as the practice was very time and labor intensive; the discovery of new cutting practices rendered it unnecessary. The intention was to reflect light back and render the stones more brilliant. As you can see, the foil backing behind the solitaire diamond in the ring has been compromised with time and has lost much of its reflective capabilities but the history of the piece and the unique look of the stone makes up for this. Crafted from 18k gold, the band is not hallmarked but has been acid tested in multiple places to guarantee purity. It is not uncommon for a ring of this age to lack a hallmark as they either were not legally required to begin with or were worn with time. The band size is quite small, but can be resized for a a fee. As is, it makes a lovely pinky ring which will add interest to any outfit.
