This stunning drapery necklace is crafted from 18k gold and is a typical example of French early 20th century design. Typically Art Nouveau, it is delightful in its natural imagery. As with many antique pieces, there remains a hidden symbolism with the choice of ivy as a motif. The allure lies in the ivy's romantic symbolism, woven into its tendrils that lovingly embrace a wall. In France, this symbolism finds expression in the phrase "Je m'attache ou je meurs," which can be poetically translated as "I will cling to you or I will die." Often this style of necklace was given to a romantic partner or given as a wedding gift. This unspoken emotional resonance, not readily apparent to all but shared intimately between the giver and the receiver, adds a unique value to this beautiful treasure.
CONDITION NOTES:
The necklace is a choker, designed to gracefully skim the neckline. It is lightweight, airy, and comfortable. As these necklaces are lightweight and very detailed they are difficult to find nowadays. This chain has been very well preserved and in excellent antique condition. The spring ring has good tension and alignment, the links are secure, and the details are not scratched or dented. There is some oxidation we've left as it helps the details of the pieces stand out but this can be cleaned before shipping with a note during check-out.
