One thing I love about antique jewelry is the sheer thought and ingenuity that goes into each piece. Victorian jewelry was frequently made with the goal of versatility and these earrings are a great example of the creativity of the craftsmen of the time. Earrings often consisted of two portions, a top 'sleeper' portion and a bottom 'dangle' portion. Known as 'day and night' earrings, you could dress them up or down to meet your needs. As with time many of the dangle portions became damaged, lost, or were melted down it's quite special to have a pair like this in good condition.
Crafted during the Napoleon III period, these earrings have a rather plain 'sleeper' portion which become extraordinary with the addition of the bottom. When worn, the ball on the bottom portion 'trembles' as the wearer moves. The bottoms have amazing detailing with a beautiful mix of very rosy old gold mixed with green gold accents. The bottom portion of the earrings are removable and slide easily over the hinge.
The earrings close with a front-latch system which was a popular French style from the Victorian period up until the mid-20th century. While the top hinge on these can be delicate, these earrings have a secure latch so you will not risk losing this beautiful heirloom piece. One hinge is a little tight so you will need to handle it carefully to open it wide enough to put into an ear, but I managed without much trouble when testing them. There is also a small fissure to one earring, visible in photos, which does not affect the wearability of the piece. There is some light oxidation to the bottom of one sleeper as well as light denting to the back if the earrings which us not visible when worn. As with all antique jewelry, they will need to be treated with care. They are a beautiful, versatile piece, as well as an excellent example of 1800s craftsmanship and fashion.
