59" Antique 18k Napoleon III French Foxtail Long Guard Chain c. 1870

This lovely guard chain comes all the way from the Napoleon III period of France. Guard chains are a type of decorative chain, historically worn with a pendant or other item attached to it. Guard chains were popular during the 18th and 19th centuries and allowed the wearer to showcase personal items or keepsakes while keeping them accessible. Long guard chains were not only functional but also served as a means of displaying one's personal style and taste.
This example showcases the unique ways in which these chains can be worn nowadays. Crafted from 18k gold yellow gold, the chain can be worn doubled as a long sautoir, quadrupled as a choker necklace, or worn wrapped three times with a hanging clasp. The long guard is crafted from a foxtail chain, a type of chain designed to provide strength and flexibility and is associated with high-quality and well-crafted jewelry due to its intricate design and the attention to detail required to create it.
The necklace features stations of Etruscan Revival spheres decorated with cannetille and green gold accents which enhances the yellow gold of the foxtail chain. One of my favorite design elements from this period was the tendency to use several colors of gold. It adds visual depth to the piece and is something difficult to find in modern jewelry. The chain is finished with a hanging bolt wring which can be used to clip a pendant or double the chain and it holds very well with very few marks of time and use.
CONDITION NOTES:
The chain is in very good condition for age. The clasp opens easily and closes securely. There are no soldering marks to the foxtail and only light oxidation from age.
