72" Silver Art Nouveau Long Guard Chain c. 1890, Antique French long Guard Chain EXTRA LONG
This beautiful silver long guard chain is the work of Louis Rault (1847-1903), a self made man born of a shoemaker who worked worked for Boucheron for seven years before going on to become widely respected in his own right. Although largely forgotten now, in his time he won numerous awards and gained praise from none other than Vever who once called him "perhaps the greatest chaser of our time".
It features trace chain punctuated by round medallion stations of Greek and Roman Goddesses in profile. In some medallions we see Minerva/Athena wearing a helmet upon which a winged chimera is perched. She was worshiped for her wisdom and sponsorship of arts, trade, and strategy.
On other stations we find Diana/Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and the moon. Diana is often depicted as a skilled huntress, carrying a bow and arrow, and is associated with wild animals and nature. As a lunar goddess, she also has ties to the moon, influencing its phases and guiding the night. Diana was highly revered in Roman religion, and her worship had various aspects, including as a protector of women and children.
Finally, some stations depict, Demeter, known as Ceres in Roman mythology, the goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest. She's often depicted with grain and a torch, symbolizing growth and nurturing. Demeter's grief over her daughter Persephone's abduction by Hades led to the changing seasons.
The chain is also adorned with a beautiful floral slide which can be used to fix the chain in different ways and adds to its versatility. The chain closes with an oversized bolt ring in excellent condition with good tension and alignment.
