Seeing all of the details and thought that goes into old pieces makes my antique loving heart happy. These simple earrings feature the most beautiful crown prongs, set in silver, which secure the central paste stones. Thinking about how they were crafted without the use of modern tools makes me appreciate the artistry and skill of the makers. At this time silver was often used as a setting metal as it was meant to reflect light back to the wearer and make the central stones appear larger. Similarly, the little silver flower mounted at the top of the earrings was meant to reflect light back and imitate another gemstone. The earring drops are not connected to the 18k gold frame so they move freely with the wearer. Made out of paste, or leaded glass, the central stones reflect light beautifully. Paste has long been used as a diamond imitation and used to be cut by experienced lapidaries in the past and prized in its own right.
CONDITION NOTES:
The earrings are in excellent condition. The hinges close securely and have a strong latch which hooks into the back of the lever-back closure to make sure you don't lose these beautiful pieces. The paste has light wear to the facets under magnification but nothing visible to the naked eye.
