Antique 18k Onyx Seed Pearl Mourning Locket, French Victorian Locket c. 1880

This opulent mourning pendant features a large Victorian onyx adorned with silver and seed pearls. The seed pearls are arranged in the shape of a flower and the shape of a garland, set in silver and accented with gold. Delicately carved on the reverse side, the onyx holds an original photograph protected by a beveled, gold rimmed glass. Adding to its elegance, the bail features a row of seed pearls. An exquisite medallion from of the late 19th century, it captures the essence of timeless mourning jewelry, evoking sentiment and beauty.

During the Victorian era, mourning jewelry served as a poignant symbol of remembrance and grief. Following the death of Queen Victoria's beloved husband, Prince Albert, in 1861, mourning practices became deeply entrenched in Victorian culture. Black attire and somber accessories, such as lockets, rings, and brooches adorned with black enamel, jet, or onyx, were worn to express mourning and respect. These pieces often featured symbols like weeping willows, urns, or strands of hair from the deceased, serving as intimate mementos. Mourning jewelry not only expressed sorrow but also served as a means of honoring the deceased and commemorating their memory in a tangible and personal way.
