Antique 18K Solid Gold Guilloche Locket c. 1900, French Belle Epoque Enginge Turned Pendant

Antique 18K Solid Gold Guilloche Locket c. 1900, French Belle Epoque Enginge Turned Pendant

The delicate and refined guilloche locket is dripping with beautifully crafted details. Guilloche, or engine turning, was a popular technique in the Edwardian period for pocket watches and lockets in which an engraving machine was carefully passed over metal to give a uniform, finely decorated surface. The added details of the beautifully designed flowers which grace the four corners and center of the piece add an extra layer of charm. Crafted from 18k gold and hallmarked with a horse head on the back of the bail, it was created between 1838-1919, most likely around 1900. The locket is a bit difficult to open as you must slide your fingernail between the edges to get the seal to break which then allows the locket open from the top. The locket closes into place wonderfully and makes a very satisfying 'click' sound, but you will need to use a little force to get it to latch. I recommend trying not to open and close it frequently to avoid damaging the piece as guilloche is delicate and the closure on this piece was recently repaired. The interior has two original frames, also crafted in gold, but the glass has been lost to time. A beautiful and rare piece of history to add to your collection.
