Crafted during the late 19th Century in France, this exquisite Victorian snake ring is crafted from 18-karat yellow gold. A sinuous serpent elegantly coils around your finger, its heads crowned with a captivating ruby which measures approximately 2.5 mm across.
One of the primary meanings associated with Victorian snake rings was eternal love and commitment. Queen Victoria's engagement ring, a serpent with an emerald-set head given to her by Prince Albert in 1839, symbolized everlasting love. They were sometimes set with birthstones or gems with specific symbolic meanings to convey sentiments. As such, this ring was possibly a gift to someone born in July. Victorian snake rings are still highly sought after by collectors and jewelry enthusiasts for their craftsmanship, beauty, and rich symbolism, serving as a testament to the romantic and sentimental nature of the era.
CONDITIONS NOTES:
The ring is in excellent condition with one piece of snake tail which has been re-soldered, visible in photos if you look closely. There are light micro-scratches to the gold but nothing to take away the charm of the piece. There are no visible hallmarks but the ring has been discretely tested for 18k gold, standard for France during this time period, which is how it was sold to me by a reputable auction house.
