Antique French Perpignan Garnet Dormeuse Sleeper Earrings, XIX Century Rose Cut Garnet Drop Earrings

Antique French Perpignan Garnet Dormeuse Sleeper Earrings, XIX Century Rose Cut Garnet Drop Earrings

These stunning Perpignan garnet sleeper earrings glow like embers from a fire. Popular in the 19th century, Perpignan garnets were created around Perpginan, close to the Spanish border. These jewels were often passed down from mother to daughter. The garnets are rose cuts, which are artfully foiled and set in gold to achieve a distinctive deep-red hue which reflects light beautifully. Evoking the influence of both French and Spanish aesthetics, this rare piece embodies the rich cultural heritage of its origin. Today, only a select few artisans in the South of France possess the expertise to create Catalan garnet jewelry, preserving the legend and story of this unique tradition.

CONDITION NOTES:
The earrings are lightweight and delicate, going into the ears through the back and attaching to a rivet at the top of the earring. This takes some getting used to but gets easier with practice. The earrings are in good condition as the hinges have been recently inspected and reinforced. One of the prongs on each earring has been worn with time, visible in pictures and video, but are still securely held by the rest so you don't risk losing the central stone.
