Antique Gold Filled Lorraine Cross with Thistle c. 1900, Antique Art Nouveau Pendant

Antique Gold Filled Lorraine Cross with Thistle c. 1900, Antique Art Nouveau Pendant

This beautiful gold filled "Lorraine cross" comes from the Lorraine region of Eastern France. It has carried different symbolism through history as it was a used as a symbol of Free France in WWII and before that a symbol of reunification of Eastern France while it was under German control. Decorated with a thistle in the middle, which is then decorated with a mini Lorraine cross, in a kind of 'Lorraine cross-ception". The thistle was a popular Art Nouveau decorative flower and the city of Nancy in Lorraine was an important center of the Art Nouveau movement. It is in excellent condition with only a small area of gold loss right where the cross connects to the bail. It would make a beautiful gift for someone who has spent time in Lorraine or for a souvenir of a memorable trip or honeymoon in the region.
