Antique Lava Stone Pansy Cameo Earrings,
Antique Lava Stone Pansy Cameo Earrings,
These unique and impressive earrings come from the late Victorian period. Carved from cream colored lava stone, they were purchased during the Grand Tour, when affluent travelers visited Europe, particularly Italy. Lava stones, often sourced from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, were affordable compared to other precious materials, making it popular among middle-class Victorians. This pair carries sentimental value as the stones have been carved into pansies. A popular French symbol of remembrance, the pansy shares the same pronunciation as the French word 'think', giving the wearer the reminder to 'think of me'. The lava stones are surrounded by a beautiful silver filigree frame and feature a simple swan neck for easy wear.
CONDITION NOTES:
The frame was originally overlaid with gold but most of the gold has been lost to time. There is light wear to the pansies from age and use, but they remain in very good condition for age.
