Antique Mid-Victorian French Cabochon Garnet Locket c. 1860
Antique Mid-Victorian French Cabochon Garnet Locket c. 1860
This stunning, heavily engraved locket is light as a feather, staying comfortable and stylishly around your neck all day long. Crafted during the Napoleon III period, around 1860, it features a large central garnet cabochon which measures 3 mm x 2 mm and is surrounded by eight smaller garnet cabochons of 1.5 mm in diameter. Each round cabochon centers an engraved petal, cleverly designed to make the face of the locket resemble a blooming flower. The reverse is delicately engraved with a floral pattern. The locket opens to reveal a glass which has been stuck to one side, eternally shielding a lucky four leaf clover. The glass pane is no longer movable, but the side could still be used to place a photo cut to size. The locket has been recently repaired and closes with a very satisfying "snap". It's small size gives it versatility; it could be used as an eye catching pendant or as a bracelet charm. The garnets shine very beautifully in the light and the pendant looks fantastic on a simple chain or clipped to the spring ring of a watch chain.
CONDITION NOTES:
Lightweight, the locket has some wear to the gold consistent with age and use which doesn't affect it's charm. The glass partition no longer moves. It is stuck to one side shielding a lucky four leaf clover. I don't know the original date the clover was stored, but it is likely over a century old.
