Antique Niello Victorian Celestial Pendant Locket, French XIX Century Sentimental Locket

Antique Niello Victorian Celestial Pendant Locket, French XIX Century Sentimental Locket

There's something about niello that is just so charming. Made of a metal mixture which has been fired in a kiln on etched silver, this practice became popularized at the end of the Victorian period. It has a lovely gunmetal metallic finish that catches the light beautifully and shines from a deep gray-blue to black depending on the light. It almost resembles graphite in appearance. Mixed with the silver base, it is a sight to behold which pictures just can't do justice. The design of the locket features lovely repeating stars, typical of the time period. The locket features a hinged interior glass partition which can be used to keep a photo or trinket tucked safely to the side. A beautiful example of French silver work and a truly one of a kind piece. Closes well and in excellent antique condition with only light wear to the locket.

CONDITION NOTES:
The locket closes well with a snap and remains shiny with minimal wear to the niello. It's rare to find a piece in such excellent condition. All niello jewelry contains at least trace amounts of lead which can be dangerous when ingested. There are conflicting opinions as to the safety of niello jewelry so it is best to be cautious and wash hands after wearing and generally be aware to avoid contact with the mouth
