Antique Old European Cut Diamond Drop Earrings, 18K Gold and Platinum Earrings c. 1900
Antique Old European Cut Diamond Drop Earrings, 18K Gold and Platinum Earrings c. 1900
These lovely late Victorian earrings are crafted from solid, buttery 18K gold topped with shiny, platinum prong settings. Typical of the period, this light colored setting more effectively reflected light back, enhancing the size and brilliance of the old European cut diamonds held securely within their grasp. Prior to 1910, platinum in France was not hallmarked, therefore the platinum has been acid tested but is consistent with period trends and styles.
The old European cut diamond, popular from the late 19th to early 20th century, is a vintage diamond shape with a round outline and larger facets, reflecting the cutting techniques of its era. Developed before modern precision tools, they feature a smaller table and higher crown, creating a distinctive play of light known for its romantic and warm appearance. With advancements in diamond cutting, the old European cut gave way to the more brilliant round brilliant cut. They also feature an open cutlet, a tiny facet at the bottom of the pavilion that can appear as a small central hole, visible in photo one.
The earrings are hallmarked with an eagle head and a numbered mount. They close with an early lever-back design.
CONDITION NOTES:
The hinges are strong with an excellent latch so you do not lose these beautiful heirloom pieces. The alignment on one latch has slightly shifted over time so you'll need to manually put it in place, but it holds securely once in place. The diamond facets are in very good condition and there is nothing which affects the charm of these lovely antique pieces.
