These lovely, small Napoleon III earrings take inspiration from the Etruscan Revival, dating them roughly between 1860-1870. So-called sleeper, or dormeuse, earrings they are small and comfortable enough for the wearer to sleep in. The shape and style is interesting as they features a rectangle with an etched three-dimensional embellishment which connects to a decoration sphere at the base of the earrings. They are closed with an early lever-back which loops through the back of the ear into the rivet at the top of the earring, visible in photos. Both of the closures are in excellent condition and very strong with a good latch. The earrings are crafted from a lovely rosy, buttery gold marked with both a horse's head and a maker's mark (M.M.). The horse head hallmark was in use from 1838-1919 making it very easy to identify these an authentic antique piece. A lovely and unique addition to any collection.
