Antique Silver Engraved Oval Locket, French Victorian Hairwork Silver Locket c. 1870
Antique Silver Engraved Oval Locket, French Victorian Hairwork Silver Locket c. 1870
This unique Victorian locket pendant is a well crafted beauty from around 1880. I couldn't find a hallmark on the piece, but it tests as minimum 800 silver purity which was standard for continental Europe at the time of production. The locket is very shiny but still retains a lovely patina. It features a beautifully etched floral design with a starburst frame on the front; The back has a central cartouche which could be used for engraving or personalization. It is large and impressive and would look great hung on a thick book chain or a long guard chain. The interior contains an original hinged glass partition which swings between the sides of the locket. Currently a hairwork plaque has been lovingly guarded inside the locket but this could be replaced with a special memory of your own.
CONDITION NOTES:
Excellent antique condition. The locket closes with a satisfying snap and the interior glass is in good condition. The outside looks to have originally been gold gilded but this has mostly worn with time. The inside retains the original gold gilt, however.
