Antique Silver Niello Romantic Locket with Personal note dated 1881

This large, oval niello locket is a rare, sentimental find. Niello is created by firing a metal mixture onto etched silver, a technique which experienced a revival in Europe at the end of the Victorian period. This locket is crafted from high quality silver which has been acid tested and hallmarked with a weevil for imported works. Sleek and smooth, we love the look of the graphite-colored niello against the shiny silver underlay. Both original frames remain with a sweet, handwritten note tucked into both sides. I haven't opened the frames for fear of damaging them, therefore you will be the first to read a message tucked safely almost 150 years ago. The left sided note is dated 1881 and has presumably not been touched since. A piece of history as well as a beautiful keepsake, this is a truly rare piece.
