Antique Silver Niello Victorian Locket

This round niello locket is a gorgeous, rare find. Niello is created by firing a metal mixture onto etched silver, a technique which experienced a revival in Europe at the end of the Victorian period. This locket is crafted from high quality silver which has been hallmarked and acid tested for verification. In excellent antique condition, the locket shows no wear to the niello. Sleek and smooth, we love the look of the graphite-colored niello against the shiny silver underlay. One original frame remains, holding a photo of a very distinguished looking gentleman. This could be removed to insert something more personal or kept as a testament to the history of the piece.

All niello jewelry contains at least trace amounts of lead which can be dangerous when ingested. There are conflicting opinions as to the safety of niello jewelry so it is best to be cautious and wash hands after wearing and generally be aware to avoid contact with the mouth
