Antique Victorian Tortoise Pique locket with Interior Glass Frame

Antique Victorian Tortoise Pique locket with Interior Glass Frame

Presenting a very interesting piece from the late Victorian period c. 1870, this unique beauty was crafted from hawksbill tortoise shell. The shells of sea turtles became prized for their unique patterns and the fact that they could be heated up and molded. Highly skilled artisans crafted intricate pieces, including hair combs, brooches, and pendants, highlighting the material's warm, mottled hues. By the early 20th century, conservation concerns led to restrictions, and the use of tortoiseshell declined.

This particular piece was likely used as a mourning locket and features a removable interior frame as well as inlaid gold and silver embellishments. The locket is surprisingly light weight given its large size and still closes very securely. Today, antique tortoiseshell jewelry remains a coveted collector's item, reflecting the intersection of craftsmanship, fashion, and environmental awareness.
