French Antique Sapphire and 1.2 Carat Diamond 18K Gold and Platinum Pompadour, Daisy Cluster Halo Engagement Ring c. 1900
French Antique Sapphire and 1.2 Carat Diamond 18K Gold and Platinum Pompadour, Daisy Cluster Halo Engagement Ring c. 1900
This exquisite early 1900s French ring features a sapphire, set in a halo of ten old mine cut diamonds accented by two brilliant cuts on each raised shoulder. The sapphire boasts a deep blue hue, beautifully complemented by the bright, chunky glitter of the diamonds, which collectively weigh approximately 1.2 carats. The sapphire measures approximately 8 x 6 mm while the diamonds rang in size between 3-3.1 mm each for the halo and 2.5 mm for the shoulders.
The ring showcases a classic French design with its halo setting, raised shoulders and diamonds set in platinum. This element was typical of the period to help reflect the light around the diamonds and enhance their brilliance. This style is very popular in France, where sapphires are perceived as a subtle and chic choice. The ring, found at a reputable estate seller in Paris, bears hallmarks for 18k gold and platinum. The ring face measures 14.5 mm by 12 mm, with a height of 7 mm off the finger.
CONDITION NOTES:
Typical of sapphires, there is some light color zoning in the middle of the stone, visible in photos. This comes from different trace elements being present as the stone forms.
