GEORGIAN Black Dot Paste Pendant c. 1800, Antique Butterfly Paste Pendant
GEORGIAN Black Dot Paste Pendant c. 1800, Antique Butterfly Paste Pendant
Words can't describe how impressive it is to hold a pendant in hand from over two hundred years ago. How many secrets does such a pendant hold? How it must have glittered in the low candlelight during the night time balls of the early 1800s. Did it grace the neck of a nervous young woman, waiting her turn for a dance?
Featuring delicate silver work, foil backing, and antique black dot paste it is a beautiful example of the craftsmanship of the era. Paste itself was a very labor intensive process which involved hand cutting and polishing glass as one would a gemstone. Very high quality paste, as we can see here, had a black dot painted on the bottom of the glass to imitate the open cutlet of a diamond. The settings in these times were made around the gemstones and this pendant shows collets which hold the stones in place. Over time, a few have been replaced, probably in the early 1900s. There is one more noticeable than the others which features a rose cut instead of the single cut of the other paste stones. The turquoise blue of the paste is an unusual and rare color which looks lovely set against the light shine of the clear cut paste. Georgian jewelry is in high demand these days and it's value is constantly increasing as it they are rare and it is difficult to find pieces in good condition. While this piece wears charming signs of time and age it is a lovely piece with lots of wear left that can accompany you for many years.
