Georgian Flat Cut Garnet Foiled Brooch c. 1820
Georgian Flat Cut Garnet Foiled Brooch c. 1820
This lovely piece is over two hundred years old and comes from the Georgian period. Georgian jewelry often featured flat cut gems rather than faceted cuts. These were often backed with foil to enhance their deep color and sparkle, and to help them shine under candlelight. Georgian jewelers valued garnets for their rich hue and symbolic meaning, often using them in sentimental pieces. The flat cut style lends a unique, subtle brilliance, reflecting the era's preference for intricate metalwork and natural, unadulterated gemstone beauty. As the hallmark has either been worn with time or pre-dates hallmark laws, the brooch has been acid tested as around 15 carat purity. The brooch pin is metal. These antique pieces remain highly collectible today.
CONDITION NOTES:
The brooch remains in excellent condition with no visible scratches to the garnets or chips. They are securely held in their cut down collet setting and the tube hinge still works to secure the brooch. The gold has been oxidized with time leaving a patina. One slight word of caution, be careful as the c-clasp brooch closures were crafted before the use of a safety mechanism, so move with care.
