Large 18K Perpignan Garnet Ring, Antique French Foil Backed Garnet Catalan Ring

This lovely marquise ring is crafted from high carat gold and foil backed garnets. Known as "Perpignan garnets" or "Catalan garnets" these are regional jewels crafted near Perpignan, in the Pyrenes foothills close to the the Spanish border. A popular style from the late 18th to early 19th centuries, these jewels were often passed down from mother to daughter. The garnets are rose cuts, which are artfully foiled and set in gold to achieve a distinctive deep-pink hue which reflects light beautifully. This particular ring has extraordinary work on the band which really makes it stand out. Evoking the influence of both French and Spanish aesthetics, this rare piece embodies the rich cultural heritage of its origin. Today, only a select few artisans in the South of France possess the expertise to create Catalan garnet jewelry, preserving the legend and story of this unique tradition.

CONDITION NOTES:
In good antique condition, there is one area where the ring has been repaired with tin so as not to damage the foiling with high heat. See picture ten to get a good view of the back of the ring for the repair. Two of the garnets are replacements which are redder in color and use old single cuts. The other garnets have light marks of time and age. The center, typical of rings in this style, is raised and unconnected to the surrounding halo. As such it is normal for it to move slightly and this is not a defect but a mark of authenticity.
