Rare 1750s Antique Georgian Ring with Garnet and table cut diamond
Rare 1750s Antique Georgian Ring with Garnet and table cut diamond
Who knows how many hands this lovely garnet ring has passed through. Featuring an original mid 18th century design, the ring features a flat cut garnet, one remaining table cut diamond, and high carat gold. One of the most interesting things about rings from this period was how beautifully decorated the bands were. Featuring swirling gold, even the ''ring butt' has character. Typical of the period, the diamonds were set in silver to enhance their shine, while the colored stone is foiled and set in a rub over setting. Gold in this period was rare to come across and the ring was very likely owned by a wealthy merchant. The ring lacks a hallmark, but has been acid tested for high carat gold. Also typical of the period, as people tended to be more petite, the ring is a small size but would make a fantastic pinky ring.
CONDITION NOTES:
Wear typical of age and use. The garnet has a scratch to the surface and one of the table cut diamonds has been lost to time, but this is not obvious when worn. Check photos and the video. The band is slightly irregularly shaped. The ring has been priced down for these defects but remains an antique treasure. It is hard to find pieces of this age as gold was rare and older heirlooms were very frequently smelted to make more modern pieces to fit the styles of the time.
