This whimsical locket is a lovely piece crafted around the turn of the century c. 1900. Featuring a captivating figural face portraying either a satyr, faun, or gargoyle, it is embedded with ruby cabochon eyes and firmly holds a rose cut diamond measuring approximately 3.5 mm in its mouth. Meticulously crafted, it opens from the side with an interior hinged partition. Originally there would have held a thick beveled glass to store photos but this has been lost to time. It remains deep enough to hold a trinket, pressed flower, or token. Pictures can also be cut to size and pressed into the side of the locket, held secure by the hinged frame. The back is beautifully engraved with the initials C.A.
From Roman mythology, a faun is a mythical creature characterized by its hybrid appearance, combining human and animal features. Often associated with the Greek counterpart, the satyr, fauns are depicted as beings with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a goat, complete with hooves and pointed ears. These nature spirits are closely connected to the wilderness, fertility, and rustic landscapes. CONDITION NOTES:
The interior glass has been lost to time and the locket has a few small dents to the back, visible in photos and the video. The locket is hallmarked on the inner rim with two eagle heads indicating an 18k gold purity while the scrolled bail at the top is hallmarked with a shell for 14k gold.
