Silver Aesthetic Slide Mirror Locket of French Origin c. 1890

Silver Aesthetic Slide Mirror Locket of French Origin c. 1890

This beautiful silver locket was crafted during the transition from the Aesthetic movement into Art Nouveau. It combines negative space and natural imagery with the graceful, flowing lines that would become characteristic of Art Nouveau. The design reflects the late Victorian fascination with Japanese art, known as Japonisme, which encouraged a new appreciation for asymmetry, simplified composition, and the beauty of the natural world. These influences helped lead decorative arts away from the heavier, more symmetrical designs of earlier Victorian jewelry toward the organic language of Art Nouveau at the turn of the century. Crafted in solid silver, the locket features a beveled glass mirror on one side and an empty compartment on the reverse, suitable for holding a photograph or other sentimental keepsake.

CONDITION NOTES:
The locket closes securely. It has light tarnish and use from age which I've left to make the chased features stand out.
