Solid 18K Gold Belle Epoque French Chain, Victorian Antique Gold Necklace c. 1890
Solid 18K Gold Belle Epoque French Chain, Victorian Antique Gold Necklace c. 1890
Crafted in the late Victorian period, c. 1890, this is my all time favorite style of specialty chain. It was likely cut down at some point in its long history from a long guard chain, creating a lovely 'ras du cou', the perfect length to skim the collarbone. The chain is hallmarked with a rhino head, which was in use from 1838. It features round medallions which are flanked on both sides by teardrop shaped links. The interiors are filled with textured filigree embellishments. I could ruminate on the amount of skill and time it would take to create a piece of art such as this, but I think the results speak for themselves. A popular French Belle Epoque style, it is difficult to find fancy chains like this as they are highly sought after.
CONDITION NOTES:
It closes with a spring ring at the neck, also 18k gold, which has good tension and alignment and which closes securely so you are not at risk of losing this heirloom piece. There are some micro-scratches to the gold, consistent with age and wear, but nothing which impacts the elegance of the chain. A timeless beauty which gives an effortless French chic style.
