Victorian 18K Gold Onyx Round Locket c. 1880, Antique French Belle Epoque Mourning Charm

Victorian 18K Gold Onyx Round Locket c. 1880, Antique French Belle Epoque Mourning Charm

This lovely two-sided banded onyx locket is bursting with charm. Simple and refined, we love the small, round size. The locket opens to reveal a hinged glass partition, indicating this locket probably started it's life as a mourning locket. Victorians would often store a piece of braided hair to remember those gone before. It was also possible to store a token, such as a piece of lace or a pressed flower, to remember someone or something close to your heart. As the onyx feature a thin layer of white banding on top, this locket was meant to be engraved with an image or monogram. An intaglio would be a beautiful way to personalize a special memory or event. While initials and monograms were more common as part of signet rings or watch fobs, they would make a very unique statement here as well. The locket is in excellent condition and closes with a very satisfying 'click'. It will hold any treasures preciously inside very securely. A very lovely little locket that can be worn many different ways and personalized as you like.
