This unique and beautifully decorated pendant is known as a "porte-louis". A porte-louis in Victorian jewelry served both practical and aesthetic purposes. These small, often ornate containers, typically attached to a chatelaine or a chain, were designed to securely hold a Louis d'or, a French gold coin. Beyond their functional use, they symbolized wealth and status, showcasing the owner's financial means and refined taste. This lovely example is made from 800 silver and features a beautifully chased flowing Art Nouveau scene of carnations and bees on the front and reverse. It closes securely and could still be used to hold a photo or personal effect. It opens by pressing down on the button in the middle of the bail. The circles depress to put a picture or coins.
