Victorian Black Enamel Locket, Antique French Mourning Locket, XIX Century Reliquary Pendant
Victorian Black Enamel Locket, Antique French Mourning Locket, XIX Century Reliquary Pendant
Common in the mid-1800s, these reliquary lockets were often used to store a memory of those gone before. In typical French style, this locket contains an interior hinged glass partition which was used to hold a token of remembrance. Larger than a modern locket, they were often held on thick book chains. This locket is bronze which has been covered with black enamel on the front and reverse, allowing room for personalization or a monogram. The middle glass window features an 800 silver frame and is slightly fragile due to age. The locket is in good age related condition with a few accidents to the enamel, visible in photos, but as the enamel and base metal are similarly colored it is not noticeable when worn. A lovely example of Victorian style and craftsmanship which will accompany you for many years to come.
