These heart stopping Victorian "day and night" drop earrings are in excellent condition for age. Opening at the top with a silver leverback system, they are crowned with a small flower adorned with natural fine pearls and centered by a blue sapphire paste stone. The drop portion of the earrings is made of thick and high quality gold fill which has been decorated with blue and white enamel. The technique of gold fill became wide-spread during the Napoleon III period as it allowed middle class French the ability to wear something that had previously only been available to the very wealthy as solid gold. Still created by skilled artisans, they are a beautiful example of the style of the time. They are in very good antique condition with light gold loss to the back, visible in photos. There is also some tarnish and darkening around the edges and the decorative portion at the bottom of the earrings, all consistent with age. The leverback system works well and closes securely. One hinge is a little delicate and will need to be handled with care. A lovely piece of French craftsmanship that is ready for a new life.
