Victorian Tortoise Shell Gold Filled Large Sentimental Locket c. 1870

Victorian Tortoise Shell Gold Filled Large Sentimental Locket c. 1870

Today we are pleased to present a very interesting piece from the late Victorian period c. 1870, crafted from hawksbill tortoise shell. Derived from the shells of hawksbill sea turtles, prized for their unique patterns, these ornaments gained popularity in the 17th to 19th centuries. Highly skilled artisans crafted intricate pieces, including hair combs, brooches, and pendants, highlighting the material's warm, mottled hues. By the early 20th century, conservation concerns led to restrictions, and the use of tortoiseshell declined.

This particular piece was likely used as a mourning locket and features a removable interior frame as well as inlaid gold filled embellishments. The locket is surprisingly light weight given its large size and still closes very securely. Today, antique tortoiseshell jewelry remains a coveted collector's item, reflecting the intersection of craftsmanship, fashion, and environmental awareness.

CONDITION NOTES:
The locket is missing a few of the gold filled embellishments, visible in photo nine. There is also some scratching to the front and reverse, consistent with age and use.
