Vintage 18k Gold and Silver Red Spinel Bangle Bracelet c. 1940, Art Deco French Opening Bracelet with Box Clasp
Vintage 18k Gold and Silver Red Spinel Bangle Bracelet c. 1940, Art Deco French Opening Bracelet with Box Clasp
This lovely vintage bangle was crafted around 1940 of 18k gold, silver, and fifteen red spinels. Red spinel was historically mistaken for either ruby or garnet, and has a rich history dating back centuries. In fact, it is a large red cabochon spinel, mistaken for ruby, which constitutes the "Black Prince's Ruby" in the British Crown. Its true identity as a separate gemstone didn't emerge until in the 19th century. The red spinels in this lovely bangle are of mixed cuts and colors, some a deeper red and others skewing slightly purple. The combinations makes for a very unique and interesting appearance. They have been set in silver to accentuate their color, with a secure hinge on the side and box clasp closure. The box clasp holds securely and is reinforced by a little security latch which can will ensure you don't lose this beautiful heirloom piece.
CONDITION NOTES:
The red spinels are of mixed color, cut, and clarity. There is light tarnish to the silver, but this serves as a testament to the bangle's age and history. In overall very good condition and hallmarked with two owl stamps, guaranteeing at least 18k gold purity. I recommend the bangle for someone with a small-medium wrist size. It fit me perfectly with a wrist size of 6.25".
