Vintage 19K Solid Gold Day and Night Sleeper Drop Earrings

These exquisite earrings are assumed Portuguese origin from the area of Gondomar. They feature a classic "day and night" design with a top round earring, known as a dormeuse, which can hold a separate, removable bottom pendant. The bottom portion of the earrings slide easily over the hinge. If you so desire, they could also be worn as a a lovely parure by adding a bail to one of the attachments and hanging it on a chain. This makes them versatile, as well as an excellent example of craftsmanship and fashion. The dormeuse earrings are round with a pearl center while the pendant drops feature a line of pearls with a green gold leaf accent. They are hallmarked with the Portuguese guarantee for 19.2 K (800 finesse). Gondomar has a rich goldwork tradition and whle the earrings are in the Victorian style, the hallmark indicates that they are 20th century vintage pieces inspired by older designs. The earrings can be a bit tricky to latch as they feature an older mechanism in which the top of the dormeuse threads through the back of the ear and hooks to a rivet at the top of the earring.

CONDITION NOTES:
The earrings are in excellent condition with light micro scratches to the gold but nothing noticeable when worn or that takes away from their charm.
